This 4-session lab course provides students with practical knowledge of various image processing techniques and their applications. The course covers fundamental image processing tools, such as histogram manipulation, spatial filtering, edge and line detection, morphological operators, and image area properties. It also compares different imaging modalities, such as visible light photography and thermal imaging. Students will learn how color images are represented in various color spaces. They will also learn noise removal techniques such as spatial filtering, linear and nonlinear diffusion, and total variation. The course also covers image compression based on block-based transform and entropy coding. Finally, students will apply their acquired knowledge to solve an open-ended task in image processing.
This course is a collaboration between SIPL lab and VISL lab.
